Thomas Willem Renckens is a documentary filmmaker based in Amsterdam.
His films often deal with the themes of fantasy and escapism. Having grown up in rural Holland, Thomas spent a great part of his childhood fantasising about being elsewhere. This urge for getting away from the real world came to define his work.
A graduate from the National Film & Television School’s ‘MA Directing Documentary’ course, Thomas has many years of experience developing documentaries for indie production companies and broadcasters such as the BBC, Channel 4, Discovery Networks, Viceland, Sony Music, October Films, Lion Television,
and The Garden.
Thomas has been the recipient of grants from Het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Fundatie van Renswoude, and Genootschap Noorthey. His graduation film ‘The Daydreamers’ screened in filmfestivals worldwide, and won numerous awards. The film was also selected as part of
the NPO’s (Dutch public broadcaster) ‘Filmmakers of the Future’ strand. Recently, Thomas received funding for
a follow-up film - ‘My Dark Beautiful World’ - which is currently in post-production.
