THOMAS WILLEM RENCKENS

Thomas Willem Renckens is a Dutch documentary filmmaker based in Amsterdam. His films often deal with the themes of fantasy and escapism. Having grown up in rural Holland, Thomas spent a great part of his childhood fantasising about being elsewhere. This urge for getting away from the real world came to define his work.

A graduate from the National Film & Television School’s ‘MA Directing Documentary’ course, Thomas has 5+ years of experience developing documentaries for indie production companies and broadcasters such as the BBC, Discovery Networks, Viceland, Sony Music, October Films, and Lion Television.

Thomas has been the recipient of grants from Het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Fundatie van Renswoude, and Genootschap Noorthey. His graduation film ‘The Daydreamers’ won a ‘Special Mention’ at Cheap Cuts Doc Film Fest 2020, and was nominated for a Grierson Award in the ‘Best Student Documentary’ category. It will also be screening at the 41st edition of Brussels Independent Film Festival, and is scheduled to be broadcast by the NPO (Dutch public broadcaster) later this year.
